Opinions

So here i am making a blog. For my first post it seems only logical to post my opinion on "opinions".

Opinions are mysterious things in that they can be anything. They cannot be described, they cannot be proven or disproved.

And for some reason or another everyone has one of these things called "opinion". Though even this simple fact is also open to differing opinions. Because no mater what the case, things that are true, untrue, good, bad, right, wrong, evil, righteous, etc. can ALL be turned on their heads by opinion.

In today's day and age it is almost mandated that everyone must have an opinion about everything. And not only that, their opinion cannot be argued. Sure you can TRY to argue by using your own opinion but this usually leads only to confusion and utter frustration. Because your opinion is no better than theirs, because everyone is equal. From the drooling idiot who eats paste to the scholar of psychology, everyone's opinion is the same.

Sure it sounds nice in theory. you can make comments that you know nothing about and in your own world you will always be right. but in a world where "popular" opinion governs truth then what about the people who have "Unpopular" opinions? If you are one of these people suddenly you realize that you're screwed. Suddenly nobody agrees with you, you seem to have few if any friends unless you just never voice your opinions but then you have a nagging feeling that you aren't being "true to your self" and everyone hates that right?

On the other hand if you just happen to share the same opinion as half of the country then hooray for you, you just lucked out in life because you can be yourself and feel great and have all the friends in the world.

Don't get me wrong though. opinions can be good when used responsibly. Example: "it is of my opinion that jam filled pastries do not taste good". In this example i get to proclaim my dislike for said food item and people who offered it to me will understand why i am not accepting their offer. yes, yes i know that is a patronizingly simple explanation.

But look on the flip side when we see the way opinions are used all over the place in today's society. Example: a person on an idol show sings horribly and the judge says "you were horrible". The person then responds with the cure all statement of "that's your opinion" (translation: You are wrong) suddenly the family and friends of the person as well as any passersby or viewers of the show who do not wish for the person to have "hurt feelings" then call in to vote for said person in order to heal the bruised ego of the horrible singer. the end result being that the singer gets closer to winning or even succeeds in winning the contest due to "pity votes" allowing someone less deserving of the award to win just because they are likable. this is a rough example and may not happen exactly like this every time but the point remains.

There are other examples of people just being able to keep believing certain things or continue acting certain ways simply because of their opinions and other people's inability to challenge them ie: "casual sex is okay", "there is nothing wrong with using violence as a way to bend people to your will", "the mistreatment of animals is fine due to the animals lack of a soul" the list goes on and on.

It does not take a genius to see that I disagree with the above opinions but some people may not and because of that such actions will continue forever.

Now for the question. What happens when people realize that ever trying to change someones opinion is not only impossible but some people believe it is "just plain wrong". And what happens when this realization brings people to the point where they just stop trying, then slowly more and more people begin to have opinions that are for the most part unhealthy. A fair assumption would be that eventually laws would be passed that people can't argue against with "that's just wrong" because this of course is "only their opinion" therefor reducing it to meaningless words dribbling out of the side of their mouths. Then it would suddenly become okay to beat your wife, molest your children, beat and molest your pet and who knows what else.

I can already tell that most people would find this to be crazy talk because something like that would never happen right? well my only answer to that would be that if you went back in time and told someone in the 1950s that people would be randomly sleeping with half of everyone they meet then speaking of their actions as proud proclamations of their "Sexual Independence", i'm sure said person would answer in much the same way.

and to anyone who disagrees or takes offence to anything here, don't worry because it is only "my opinion" and therefor means nothing.
